How do you deal with vests?

We always find male music artists wearing the vest of a three piece suit as a standalone and separate clothing item like Justin Timberlake, Usher and Adam Levine, to name a few. Sometimes they wear it with a plain white tee and blue jeans or rolled up long sleeves dress shirt and slim fit slacks. Some pair it with a painter’s hat or a fedora and some rock artists even wear the vest over a naked chest. Wearing a vest detached to the other two pieces of the suit is quite risky. Partly you have to have that swag that these musicians possess and follow the following fashion use of vests.

  • Vest + Matching Trousers + Dress Shirt. In a three piece suit, discard the jacket and wear that matching vest and trousers and put in a white dress shirt. Make sure the trousers are not lousy and in a sharp slim fit. Button the vest all the way up and roll or fold the shirt’s sleeves up to your elbow. You can go tie-less or kick this outfit with a loosely tied slim tie or a bowtie.
  • Vest + Dress Shirt + Jeans. Key to dressing down is pairing the vest with jeans. You may use black or blue slim fit jeans for this look. Button the vest all the way to the top. You may opt to be trendy and wear a dress shirt in pin stripe pattern and undo the top buttons for that rugged feel. Wear a thick belt to be consistent with the casual look.
  • Vest + Khakis + Denims. Two definitely modern cowboy in the city look are as follows: 1) white undershirt, blue or denim shirt (undone top buttons, and rolled up sleeves to the elbows), black formal unbuttoned vest, khaki slim fit pants and black leather high cut shoes and 2) black v-neck slim fit tees, brown/khaki formal vest, blue denim pair of jeans and brown leather shoes. You can either match your shoes to the color of your belt or vest.

NOTE : In dealing with vests, it is best to wear it together with an informal statement belt with a buckle that probably says LV or with a designer print/pattern. As the suit jacket is disregarded and the belt area of the pants shows off, a belt would be a nice accessory to that exposed area.

You don’t have to be Justin Timberlake for an outfit with a vest drama but you should be cautious as these three variations of illegal use of suit vests mentioned are challenging to pull off. It can either make or break an existing outfit. It normally suits a guy with lean body like the musicians mentioned earlier. The vest has its slimming effect however, do not abuse this feature, the vest cannot serve as a corset to your belly crisis.

A man’s closet is never complete without a pair of jeans. It is the king in a man’s wardrobe in terms of usefulness, versatility and frequency of use. Other than your work clothes, the jeans are the most worn item from a casual date, a walk in the park, doing the grocery, or even when you are just at home. It may not be the most expensive clothing item you possess however; you should know what to look for in buying the correct one as you’ll wear them for years.

Know your real measurements. A 32×32 measurement means 32 inches waist and 32 inches inseam. If you wear 32 sized jeans, it doesn’t mean that your waist measures 32 inches. A universal marketing strategy of clothing brands is vanity sizing. Your waist is probably 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches larger than your vanity size and this factor differs from brand to brand sometimes from one style to the other. So it is still necessary to go to a store and try them on. For the inseam, 32 inches is standard and most common. It is safer to buy longer jeans for allowance for possible shrinking. You can just fold it or have it altered. For the buttocks and thigh area, you may choose between a regular or relaxed fit. Widely chosen fit is the regular but for muscular men; a relaxed fit better suit you considering it is more comfortable. In terms of rise, or the distance between the top button area to the crotch, the options are either high, mid or low rise. Low rise are often worn by younger men below 30s or for men without a muffin-top to show. A harmless preference would be a mid rise as it is placed just where your belly button is cutting the area where unflattering bulges might show. For leg build, there are lots of options per brand ranging from straight cut, bootleg, skinny, and etcetera. If you are confused as to what to buy, a regular straight leg is always a hit or a slight boot cut if you want a little flare at the bottom when wearing boots.

Color and Wash

Stick to a timeless, tried and tested denim wash and style. As brands may introduce different trendy and funky designs, prints, color and wash, you may opt to stay with ones that have survived the test of time if you want to get the most out of your money. Choices are the classic blue jeans you can wear all day, slightly faded jeans for more laid back look and the dark denim for smart-casual attire best paired with any kind of jacket.
